What is a backlink overlap analysis?
Why use a backlink analyzer
- ✓Find shared referring domains across competitors

- ✓Prioritize outreach to domains already willing to link
- ✓Process large CSV exports without hitting tool seat limits

Why link-gap analysis is the highest-ROI link building tactic
Cold outreach to random publishers has a single-digit success rate because the editor has no reason to believe your content fits their site. Link-gap outreach flips the odds. When you can say "you already link to my three competitors on the same topic — here's a more recent, more thorough resource you should consider", the response rate jumps because you're not asking the editor to make a new decision, you're asking them to update one they already made.
That entire pitch hinges on identifying the right domains in the first place. The naive way is to scroll through each competitor's backlink report and copy-paste the overlapping ones into a spreadsheet. For a meaningful sample size — three competitors, a few thousand backlinks each — that's a day of work, plus the spreadsheet inevitably misses dedupe issues, capitalisation mismatches and subdomain noise. The analyzer below collapses that day into a few minutes.
How overlap math actually works
Upload two competitor backlink CSVs and the tool computes three sets: domains linking to A only, domains linking to B only, and domains linking to both. Upload three CSVs and you get seven sets (every combination of the three). The overlap set — domains linking to all uploaded competitors — is the high-conviction outreach list. These are publishers who have already linked to multiple sites in your space, which means they cover the topic, accept external resources, and have a pattern of doing so.
Add your own backlink CSV as one of the inputs and the analysis flips into a gap report: domains that link to every competitor except you. That's the cleanest possible target list. Sort by domain authority, filter to topical relevance, and you have a campaign brief.
Reading the results like an SEO
Overlap count matters more than raw volume. A domain that links to two competitors is interesting. A domain that links to all four is a near-certain win. Sort the results descending by overlap count and start outreach from the top.
Watch out for low-quality clusters. Spammy domains link to everyone in a niche, which means they'll show high overlap but no value. Filter by DR, traffic and topical relevance before pitching.
Pay attention to anchor diversity. If every competitor gets the same exact-match anchor from a domain, that's a paid-placement footprint — skip it.
Keep CSVs current. Backlink datasets age fast. A six-month-old export will include domains that no longer link out, wasting outreach effort. Re-export quarterly for the freshest gap report.
