Lorem Ipsum Finder

Every developer and designer has done it: drop placeholder copy into a template to test the layout, plan to swap it before launch, and then ship it. The placeholder survives because the page never went through a final content QA pass, or because a CMS template got reused without anyone realising it still had Lorem Ipsum baked into the default field, or because a staging-only theme accidentally got promoted to production. The result is the same — a public-facing page with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" on it, indexed by Google, screenshotted by competitors, and surfaced on social media before anyone internal notices.

The cost ranges from mild embarrassment (a single about-page bio still says "Tell us about yourself") to active SEO harm (a template-driven directory of a thousand product pages all show identical placeholder copy, which Google reads as duplicate thin content). Either way, the fix is to catch it before launch with a bulk scan rather than relying on every team member to remember every page.

The tool fetches each URL server-side and searches the rendered HTML for the recognised Lorem Ipsum phrase set — "lorem ipsum", "dolor sit amet", "consectetur adipiscing", "ut labore et dolore" — plus the most common English placeholder patterns: "dummy text", "sample text", "placeholder", "text here", "insert text", "your content here" and "this is a test". Pages that match are flagged with the offending snippet so you can locate the exact element to replace.

The scan reads server-rendered HTML, which means it sees what crawlers see. Content injected purely by client-side JavaScript (for example, a single-page-app shell rendered post-load) is out of scope — those pages need a separate audit using a headless-browser based crawler.

Before every launch. The day before a site or section goes live, paste the URL list and scan. Catching one forgotten placeholder is worth the thirty seconds the scan takes.

After bulk imports. CMS imports often have empty rows or fallback templates that quietly render placeholder text. Run the scan against the imported URL list to verify every record got real content.

After theme or template changes. A theme update can reintroduce placeholder defaults that the old theme had overridden. Quarterly scans catch regressions.

After agency handoffs. When an external team finishes a project, the scan is a fast trust-but-verify step before sign-off.

On the production sitemap. Combine with the sitemap extractor for a periodic full-site audit. Even mature sites accumulate placeholder pages over years — old draft posts left unpublished, abandoned landing pages, archived events.
